3D scanning for sculptors
Scanning captures surfaces, not understanding. Results depend on planning, coverage, alignment, and cleanup.

A 3D scanner records points or images and reconstructs them as a digital surface. Structured-light and laser scanners measure geometry directly; photogrammetry derives it from overlapping photographs. Each trades speed, detail, portability, cost, and tolerance for difficult surfaces.
Capture is a coverage problem
Glossy, transparent, dark, repetitive, or deeply occluded surfaces are difficult. Plan multiple angles, maintain overlap, lock exposure when photographing, and use removable targets or scanning spray only when appropriate. Hair, thin edges, holes, and undercuts deserve extra attention.
Resolution should match the purpose. A life-size enlargement needs reliable proportion more than microscopic texture. A small relief may need denser capture. More data is not better if the computer cannot align or process it.
The scan is not the sculpture
Alignment, fusion, hole filling, decimation, scale verification, and mesh repair follow capture. Preserve raw sessions before destructive cleanup. Compare known measurements and inspect silhouettes; a watertight mesh can still be inaccurate.
Scanning is excellent for archiving clay, enlarging maquettes, fitting additions, documenting work, and bridging hand sculpture with digital production. It should preserve decisions, not replace them.
